  • Black sharpie pen

  • Plastic cup

  • Yarn

  • Plastic needle

  • Needle threader (if needed)

  • Scissor

  • Yarn - various colors.

Resources to purchase material:

Directions:

Sketch Your Design

  • Sketch your design on the burlap square.

Emoji handouts:

  • Add the details you want in your design.

Thread Your Needle

  • Thread your first color you want to add to your burlap.

  • Thread your needle. If you need to, use your a needle threader.

  • Needle threader is a wonderful tool to help you thread a needle.

  • Once you thread your needle, you should have a long tail and a short tail.

  • On the longer part of your yarn, tie two double knots. This will prevent your yarn from pulling through the burlap.

  • This takes a little practice but it is an easier way to do a double knot.

Running Stitch

  • Take your needle and come up through the back of the fabric. You can start any where on your design. Make sure you pull on the yarn through up to the knot.

  • Following your design, you will now go down through your burlap.

  • You will repeat this step until you have covered the desired area.

The Tie Off

  • Once you are finished using the color, you need to tie off the yarn to it does not unravel. Flip over the burlap. Don't worry if it is messy.

  • Pick a stitch which is closest to were you left off. Put the needle underneath that stitch.

  • Pull through until you have a small loop.

Here is a clear example of tying off.

1.

2.

  • Repeat this two or three times going under the same stitch.

  • Once you have done this, take your scissors to cut off the extra yarn.

  • You can use different color threads to sew your different designs on your emoji.
