Prep:

  • Cut felt into squares.

Directions:

Refresher Course

  • Watch the two video's as a refresher course on threading a needle and the running stitch.

  • Practice:

  • Take your felt square and draw 3 straight lines with a sharpie. You can use a rule or straight edge.

  • Practice the running stitch and tie off on each of the 3 lines.

  • Create a simple design using the running stitch.

Trace and cut out your pattern

  • Trace and cut out two identical circles onto your fabric. Use a cup to trace it. Try to cut them as evenly as possible so they match up when you make your key chain.

  • Now you are going to add the details to the top of your key chain. Use your felt marker to mark your eyes and nose. Where will your button go?

Sew Your Button!

Thread your needle. Knot it.

  • Come up through the back of the felt and go through one of the holes in the button. Be careful as you go through the button. Pull it till you feel it stop at the knot.

  • Next you will go back down through the front of the button in the hole that is across from the hole you just came up through.

  • You are going to repeat this step with the same two holes three more times in the same two holes. Come up from the back through the first hole you came through. Pull your thread all the way through until it is tight and then going back down through the front to the hole that is opposite.

  • Now you will repeat this with the top and bottom holes. Coming up from the back, until the thread is tight against the felt. Then go down through the front. Do this three more times.

  • Now it is time to tie off and secure your button. Come up from the back of your felt next to your button. Do not go through any holes. Pull your thread all the way through.

Wrap the thread around the button four times.

  • Take your needle back down right next to where you came up and pull your needle through until tight.

  • Turn your felt over and tie off your thread. Go through one of the stitches and pull until you have a small loop.

  • Put your needle through the small needle and pull it through. Repeat this step 3 or 4 times.

  • Cut off excess.

Decorate and Sew your Key chain together

  • Use paint marker or sharpies to decorate the rest of your key chain. You can also stitch in anything you want too.

  • Now it is time to sew your key chain together. Put your front piece on top of your back piece. The front piece is the one with the button.

  • Thread your needle. Knot it.

  • Take your needle and come up from the back. Pull the thread all the way through till it is tight. (start a little to the right top side of your key chain.

  • Go over a little bit and go from the front to the back. Pull all the thread through. Make sure you go through both pieces. This is your running stitch.

  • You will use this running stitch to sew together both pieces together.

  • Make sure you leave a little space on top for your ribbon and key chain ring holder.

  • Cut a piece of ribbon about 8". Glue one side and attached to the inside of the emoji.
