Helicopter!

STEM Kit

In this STEM kit, children will be introduced to the concepts of lift and drag in respect to helicopters in a fun and educational way. A helicopter is nicknamed a chopper or heli. A helicopter lifts off of the ground and moves because of its rotors. A rotor is several small wings. They are called rotor blades. A rotor is the rotating part of a helicopter

which generates lift, either vertically in the case of a main rotor, or horizontally in the case of a tail rotor. You can see this in the diagram to your right. A helicopter is engineered in such a way that it can stop and stay in one place above the ground. That is because it’s rotor blades are always moving. This allows helicopters to land in places where an airplane cannot. Helicopters can move by tilting their rotor blades, which cause the aircraft to fly in the direction the blades are tilted.

So now that we know some basic terms about wind and lift, read the book, Helicopters by Cari Meister to learn more interesting facts about helicopters. Afterwards, you will build a Rubber band helicopter.
