(p. 6) What kind of weather to we find in Winter? (p. 8) Have children stand up and fly like a bird. Have kids sit down. Song: Feathered Birds Five feathered birds sitting on the door;

One flew away and then there were four.

Four feathered birds singing in the tree,

One flew away and then there were three.

Three feathered birds looking at you,

One flew away and then there were two.

Two feathered birds sitting in the sun,

One flew away and then there was one.

One feathered bird looking like a hero, He flew away and now there are zero! Read the book, Winter is Here by Kevin Henkes. Afterwards ask children how Winter effects birds? Tell them we are going to help them by making a bird feeder. Show them a sample with the bird seed. Supplies:

  • Glue gun

  • 16 oz foam cups

  • 8" foam plates (hefty)

  • Foam bowls

  • String - cut into 16" long pieces (one per craft)

  • tacky glue

  • markers

  • scissors

  • bird seed in small baggies (one per child).

Bird Feeder Craft

  • Trace the top of 16 oz foam cup onto the foam plate.

  • Take glue gun and place glue around the circle you traced onto the plate.

  • Place foam cup on top of the glue. Add additional glue around the perimeter of the cup where it meets the plate to make sure it is secure.

  • Using a pencil, poke a small hole in top of foam bowl.

  • While this is being done, how children decorate the bowl. It will be inverted so make sure child decorates it accordingly.

  • Take your 16" piece of heavy string and make a triple knot on one end. Take the other end and pull through the hole so the knot is inside the cup.

  • Take tacky glue and place glue on top of the cup. Place bowl onto the glue so the bowl is inverted.

  • If parents want they can take home a small baggie of bird seed.
