STEM Storytime: Ducks

This program has been created as an outreach program designed to take place at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge.

Children sit at picnic tables to talk about the animals that live in the pond. What types of animals live in and around the pond? We are looking for an answer - ducks. Once ducks are selected we will talk about ducks:

Use the book, Ducks Quack! by Pam Scheumemann to share basic facts about ducks such as:

  • Did you know that ducks can live almost anywhere

  • They have feathers instead of hair. Their outer feathers are waterproof

  • Ducks use their bills to clean their feathers.

  • They walk with a waddle on their webbed feet.

  • Ducklings follow their mother from the nest to the pond. Ducks nest near ponds, rivers, and lakes. When ducklings are ready, they follow their mother to the water to feed.

Book shared,

Ducks! by Gail Gibbons (older audience) or Truck Full of Ducks by Ross Burlack for a younger audience.

Take a short walk around the pond. Can you see any ducks today? Look for items on the ground like leaves, pinecones, bark etc.
