Integrate play-based learning in a library program is a great way to introduce and/or accelerate STEM education. So what is play-based learning, according to a report by Sphero Whitepages:
Play-based learning (more specifically, guided play-based learning) involves a blend of student-initiated and educator-supported learning — both of which build upon a child’s innate desire to play. Like free play, guided play is fun, flexible, and voluntary. However, it requires a careful balance of child-directed learning and gentle guidance from an educator toward a learning goal.
SPHERO Maze
The program is geared to middle school students. It is an introduction to how to use the sphero device. I placed cushions around the library to make a maze. Kids need to maneuver around the maze. This program was open to kids in grades 2nd - 6th. We also had a teen volunteer.
There are a wealth of activities to build on this program and are provided by Sphero.
SPHERO Bowling
Sphero bowling was a fun program I provided over the summer. Again and introduction to Sphero.
Tammy made the bowling alley out of Baker and Taylor cardboard we recycled. We had a teen volunteer who ran the game for me. I enjoyed time to record it.
