Storytime Preparation:

1. Storytime Introduction: Welcome to Toddler Storytime. My name is Ms. Debbie. I am so glad to see you today. Our storytime is designed to be participated by everyone. We will share books, rhymes, and songs with your children. We encourage everyone to participate, but no worries if this doesn't happen. Sometimes when a child sees you participate, they might join in, but if your child is not in the mood, that is okay too. Our storytime can tend to be a little chaotic, but that is okay as well. If your child becomes disruptive, please take them outside the program room and then join us again when your child has settled down. This is normal, it is part of the process. So, let's start with our opening song.

2. Opening Song:

(Credit: No Time For Flash Cards. 2016, January 30).

Lyrics:

How Many Friends are Here Today?

How many friends are here today?

How many friends are here today?

Let's count it out!

Let's clap it out!

Let's dance it out!

There are ______ friends on their feet!

Now it's time to take your seat!

3. Early Literacy Aside: Explain:

Today's early literacy skill is focusing on background knowledge. Building background knowledge is one of the most important things a parent can help a young child to do. This is because the extent of a child’s background knowledge on starting school is a strong predictor of how easily he or she will learn to read.

4. Theme Talk:

Today our storytime is about the polar bear who lives in the Arctic with many other interesting animals. Our letter of the week is "P".

7. Shakers Shaker Song

Sung to the tune of “London Bridge

Shake your shakers, shake, shake, shake,

Shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake

Shake your shakers, shake, shake, shake,

Shake your shakers!

Other Verses

Shake your shakers high, high, high,

Shake your shakers low, low, low,

Shake your shakers fast, fast, fast,

Shake your shakers slow, slow, slow"

(Mulvenna, L. (2013, January 17)

8. Early Literacy:

Background knowledge is simply What do I know or need to know that will help me understand what I just read. It also includes any life experiences that would clarify a passage. Sharing books and going over the vocabulary will help your child build new knowledge. In this storytime, we will be talking about Polar bears and other animals that live in the Arctic. As an example, being introduced to these terms will aide in the development of higher or more advanced knowledge about the Arctic or Arctic animals.

9. Movement Activity:

Polar Bear, Polar Bear

Polar bear, polar bear turn around Polar bear, polar bear touch the ground Polar bear, polar bend down low Polar bear, polar bear touch your toes Polar bear, polar slide on the ice Polar bear, polar bear spin around twice Polar bear, polar bear reach up high Polar bear, polar bear wave goodbye Credit: Adventures of a Bookworm. 2018, March 7. Polar Bears. Retrieved from https://www.adventuresofabookworm.com/2018/03/07/storytime-polar-bears/

10. Book:

A Splendid Friend, Indeed by Suzanne Bloom

11. Song:

The More We Read Together [Tune: "The More We Get Together" ]

Lyrics:

The more we read together, together, together.

The more we read together, the better it is!

'Cause reading and singing and talking together,

is how you learn the six skills for reading by six.

(Johnson County Library, 2011, February 8).

12. Felt board:

Cut out pictures from the template below. Laminate and cut out. Glue sandpaper to the back of each.

Have children go to the story rug. “I'm going to say the following words: polar bears, arctic; fox, walrus, seals, reindeer, snowy owl, Arctic hare and killer whale. They all are a type animal that lives in the … (Arctic).”

13. Early Literacy Aside:

One way to help children develop prior knowledge is by teaching words in categories. Using a felt board like this one I made can be helpful in this activity. Here is an example, in the activity we do next I will place a group a words into a category. In this case it is Arctic animals. By placing words in categories of objects helps children to begin to develop concepts which in-turn helps develop background knowledge.

14. Good-bye Song

(L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library, 2014, September 28).

Goodbye Bubbles:

(Librarian/staff associate will blow bubbles while the parents/caregiver and children sing the song.

Lyrics:

Goodbye Bubbles

Goodbye Bubbles

Time to Go

Time to Go

I will help you

I will help you

With a blow

With a blow
